I forgot to mention in my last post that I briefly spec’d Fury on Ecgric, just to see what it was like. I think it is safe to say that I don’t know how to fury. I understand arms because I leveled arms from 1 to 60. And I understand protection because I’ve been leveling that from 60 to 72 (dinged 72 last night, by the way). But I’ve never played as fury before, and I think I have a lot to learn about that spec before I can properly evaluate it.
What I can say is that I’m pretty sure that even if I were to know how the fury spec well, I still wouldn’t enjoy the loss of survivability that protection gives me. As protection, I basically just point myself at my target and head that way, mowing down anything in my path.
I had an interesting experience last night that kind of validates my choice of leveling as protection. I was doing a quest in which you have to deliver an alliance deserter back to his people. I was trying to figure out how to get to the rendezvous point from Warsong Hold when I chanced upon a Magnataur. I’d fought Magnataurs before and didn’t think I’d have much trouble, so I charged right in. Only to discover that this particular Magnataur was elite. Uh oh. So I popped Shield Wall and proceeded to melee as usual. The fight lasted longer than usual, but the result was the same. The mob was dead and I was still standing.
I think I’ve toyed with other specs enough to realize that prot is the way to go. When I hit 80, I might spec something else. Or, more likely, I’ll dual-spec in order to add an arms spec. That will allow me to run instances as DPS, in case I decided to give that a try.
