When WoW was new, there was a lot in the game that wasn’t well designed. Maybe “not well designed” isn’t really the right way to put it. More likely, the game designers just didn’t really know how certain game mechanics would play out in practice, so they threw stuff together to see what would stick and what would need to be reworked. Hunters are a good example. Back in the day, Hunters had to level their pets’ skills “by hand”. Pets didn’t have their own talent points. They had abilities with ranks. Abilities depended on the type of pet. Cats, for example, might have a bite ability. As a cat’s experience level increased, her potential ability rank increased as well. I don’t remember the exact details, but lets say a cat had a bite of rank 1 when newly tamed at level 10. At level 20, the maximum bite rank might be 2. But the cat’s bite didn’t automatically increase to rank 2. It was still at rank 1 until her hunter trained her to rank 2. How did a hunter train her cat to rank 2? Well, this is where things got interesting. Different ranks of an ability were actually considered different abilities. A rank 2 bite was basically a different ability than a rank 1 bite. In order for a hunter to teach her pet a certain rank of an ability, the hunter herself needed to know that ability at that rank. How did a hunter learn pet abilities? By going out and finding a beast that knew the ability, at the given rank, taming it, and then spending time with the pet. If the hunter spent enough time with the pet, then the hunter herself would acquire all of the abilities of the pet. Once the hunter learned an ability, she could then teach it to all of her other pets that were able to learn that ability.

What all this meant in practice was that hunters had to spend a fair amount of time taming pets just to learn pet abilities. And looking back on it now, the whole system feels like it was a bit ad hoc. By which I mean that it didn’t feel well thought out and it ended up creating game play I doubt the game designers had envisioned when they first designed it. For example, hunters couldn’t necessarily depend on which untamed beasts had the rank of ability they needed to learn. Research was required to figure out which beasts to tame in order to learn the abilities they needed. Not all beasts were the same. Cats in some parts of the Azeroth would know rank 2 bite, while others, in other parts of Azeroth wouldn’t. You couldn’t just run out and tame any level 20 cat and expect to learn rank 2 bite. You needed to know where to go and what cats to look for. All of which meant that hunters had to play a kind of mini-game of taming pets just so they could play their class. Personally, I enjoyed this ad hoc mini-game, but I could imagine other hunters not enjoying it at all. I could also imagine that other players playing classes other than hunter might be a little jealous. Not necessarily because they didn’t get to play the same taming game. But because they didn’t have a mini-game like it for their class.

Pets no longer have ability ranks, and there is no longer a need to go out and tame specific pets just to learn new ranks of abilities. The whole system was scrapped in favor of a talent system for pets. Pet abilities still exist, but hunters can now be guaranteed that pets in a given family will have the abilities of that family. Blizzard has normalized the entire pet ability system so that each family has its own unique set of abilities. The current system feels much more like it was by design. It also feels like it behaves exactly as the game designers envisioned it would.

I am fascinated by the distinction between ‘ad hoc’ and ‘by design’. Game design that is ‘by design’ feels very predictable, while ‘ad hoc’ design feels unpredictable. Ad hoc design can lead to emergent game play. By ‘emergent game play’ I mean game play that isn’t imagined by the game designers. My guess is that, in general, game designers aren’t really comfortable with emergent game play because it is, almost by definition, out of the designers’ control. Game designers may have very few tools with which to alter or “fix” emergent play. Going back to the hunter example, it may or may not have been the case that the designers intended for hunters to travel the world looking for beasts to tame, but that is the play that emerged from the pet abilities system. But that game play was not really under the designers’ control. It was a confusing system for new players, and even experience players might not be aware of how to find the beasts they needed to tame to take full advantage of their pets’ abilities. All of which likely resulted in some hunters having an advantage over other hunters simply because they knew about the Petopia website, or they had read some forum post with a trick about where and how to tame a special pet. There was likely little that the game designers could do to make serious changes to the pet ability system as it existed in the original game. So they scrapped it and replaced it with something far more predictable and far less ad hoc.

The current pet talent system is almost certainly easier for the developers to tune and balance. It’s also easier for new players to understand. I’m not knock the talent system at all. I think it still provides hunters with ways to customize their pets. Heck, in some ways the talent system gives hunters more interesting choices than the old pet ability system did. I know the Blizzard game designers are very big on providing players with interesting choices and the current pet talent system does that well.

That said, I can’t help feel a little nostalgic for some of the emergent play that has disappeared in the game.

In a recent post I suggested that Rogues make a good class for a person new to World of Warcraft. Now I’d like to consider which professions to choose that will maximize the fun.

There was a time when the question of which profession goes well with the Rogue would be simple: leatherworking, because it provided much needed gear upgrades while leveling. Times have changed, however, and the various armor crafting professions haven’t kept up with the rest of the game, at least not while leveling. Quest rewards have been revamped throughout the game, and it is now quite easy to have a reasonably well-equipped character from quest rewards alone. In fact, I think it’s almost more fun to equip a character purely from quest rewards than it is to equip a character from crafted pieces. To make matters worse (or better, depending on how you look at it), the Looking For Group tool makes it even easier to equip a character with decent gear. Before the LFG, it could be quite challenging to run dungeons enough times to get meaningful gear upgrades. If you had a group of friends, or a guild, that you could depend on to run dungeons with on a regular basis, then you probably had decent gear. But if you tended to run solo a lot, as I do, then dungeons were something you’d only run very occasionally, and definitely not enough to depend on for gear. When the LFG was introduced, all that changed. It suddenly became possible to run dungeons even for loners like me, and that put all the previously out-of-reach blue dungeon gear at everybody’s fingertips. The LFG is great, but it does make the various gear crafting professions, like leatherworking, even less relevant to the leveling processes.

There is actually another reason to avoid leatherworking as a leveling profession: crafting plateaus. A “crafting plateau” is a range of levels in a crafting profession for which the material costs to make items that allow a level up are so high that you end up having to grind for materials (or buy the materials on the Auction House) just to get past the plateau. I know for leatherworking there is a plateau right before hitting 250. The problem, basically, is that we now level our characters so quickly that we end up leveling out of the areas containing the mobs that drop the kind of leather we need in order to craft leather gear. And the leather requirement for the gear is higher than it should be. If this were end game gear, then I could understand the material costs for one piece of gear being high or hard to find. But for low-level gear that’s needed just to level, I don’t really get the point. I think Blizzard needs to seriously overhaul the various gear crafting professions and re-tune their material costs and leveling requirements for the lower levels. Maybe they can make the gear itself more relevant at the same time.

The crafting plateau problem is actually even worse as you approach the various level caps for old expansions. In Burning Crusade, for example, the level cap for professions was 375, but levels become hard to come by at much lower levels. Blizzard has made adjustments such that the lowest level items in the next expansion, Wrath in this case, starts before the end of the highest level items in the previous expansion. For example, the first craftable LW item in Wrath is Borean Armor Kit, which can be crafted at 350. So once you hit 350, you can start crafting armor kits to get to the next item level, which is 370 (Arctic Boots and others). But getting even to 350 turns out to be fairly painful and requires a fair amount of either grinding mobs for leathers, or expensive AH purchases, to accomplish. What makes the whole process even worse is that none of the gear that you’ll craft to level leatherworking to 350 is even anything you want. It’s all completely overshadowed by even the lowest level Wrath gear (crafted or not).

Which is just a very long way of saying, don’t take leatherworking for your new Rogue. It won’t be fun. If you want to be a leatherworker at end game, then wait until you’ve leveled to the level cap and then level leatherworking.

If not leatherworking, then what, you might asked. If this is a new character on a new server, without any gold, then the usual strategy is to level two gathering professions and sell everything you gather on the AH. Which gathering professions are best may depend a bit on the server, but in general, I think all the gathering professions work to make money. I’m partial to mining (as it feeds into blacksmithing and jewelcrafting), but herbs should also do quite well (herbs are also needed by two professions: alchemy and inscriptions). Skinning isn’t bad either, and if you are planning to become a leatherworker at some point in your career, you might want one of your gathering professions to be skinning, just so you can have a head start.

Gathering professions can be a great way to make money, but they aren’t necessarily fun. If it’s fun you are looking for, then I’d suggest taking a look at engineering. Engineering is probably my favorite profession. It has it all, really. Everything from craftable vanity pets, such as squirrels and rabbits, to useful items such as Parachute Cloak and Deepdive Helmet. But even more valuable than pets and parachutes, in my opinion at least, are the various teleportation devices. There’s a teleport to Gadgetzan (or Everlook for Goblin engineerings), a teleport to Toshley’s Station (or Area 52 for Goblin engineers), and a wormhole generator to various locations in Northrend. I use these teleportation devices frequently. They save all kinds of time getting from one place to another.

I should probably warn you upfront that the one thing you probably won’t do with engineering is make any money. To be honest, I’ve not really investigated engineering for money-making potential, so there might be a couple of interesting items that other players tend to like to buy. Back when Hunters used ammo, engineers could make some money crafting ammo and putting it on the AH. And there are scopes and guns that can still be sold to Hunters. In general, though, I doubt you are going to make much with engineering. The reason to level engineering isn’t for the money, it’s for the fun of it.

If you do choose engineering as one of your professions, then you’ll probably want to compliment it with mining. Occasionally you’ll need materials from one of the other gathering professions, but the vast majority of the materials used by engineers comes from mining.

I threatened to roll a Goblin hunter, and here she is. She’s currently all of level 10. She has yet to leave the Lost Isles, but she’s high enough level to pick her spec and tame her first pets. Some things of note about Hunters and Goblin Hunters:

1. One reason I rolled a Goblin hunter was because I wanted to tame some of the cool beasts I’ve seen roaming the Lost Isles. Granted, none of these beasts are unique. I can tame them anywhere in Azeroth. But I like the idea that they’re all in one place. I figured I could wander around taming every beast I saw. Which would have been a great idea, except for one little problem: As far as I can tell, there are no Stable Masters anywhere to be found. Bummer. I hate abandoning pets. And I particularly hate abandoning my starter pet. Goblins start off with a Crab, which, while not particularly special, is still cute enough to hang on to. Also, I consider the starter pet to be special. Hunter’s have plenty of space in the stable to keep the starter pet, so why abandon it? Except that with no Stable Master, abandoning is the only choice if I want to be able to tame anything else. Hopefully Blizzard will rectify this oversight and stick a Stable Master somewhere on the Lost Isles.

2. Since I can’t stable my pets, I’ve decided that my strategy will be to tame as many pets as I can, one at a time, while I’m still on the Lost Isles. As far as I know, once I leave, I can’t go back, so this is my only chance. Might as well make the most of it. My first tamed pet was a raptor. When I tamed it, it was red. I even named it ‘Red’. But when I logged in this morning, before breakfast, I found my red raptor had become a black raptor. After breakfast I logged in again and discovered my black raptor was now purple. Cool. Too bad I couldn’t keep him. When I got to the bit with the turtles, I abandoned my raptor and tamed a turtle. I think this might be my first turtle pet. He’s quite cute. I resisted the urge to name him Bourne. That was Pikestaff‘s clever joke. I’m almost tempted to keep the turtle, but I know i can’t. Not if I want to tame something else. I know there are monkey’s on the island, and I’m keen to tame one of those as well.

3. If you are planning to roll a Hunter, keep in mind the one ironclad rule of Hunters: no melee! Hunters are ranged DPS. Period. Ignore Raptor Strike when you train it. You’ll never use it. Or, at least, you shouldn’t use it (and when the Mists of Pandaria expansion hits, you won’t be able to, because Hunters will no longer be able to use melee weapons). If something’s getting in your face, the first order of business is to get back to range so you can continue attacking with your ranged weapon. Before level 10, it can be a little tricky to stay at range. You don’t have control of your pet. To compensate, you have to use strategies that keep the mobs at a distance until they die. The trick is to open each attack as far away from the mob as possible. Your pet will immediately engage anything you shoot. You may need to back up a bit, or even sidestep, which is faster, in order to keep distance between you and the mob. That gives your pet a chance to engage the mob and grab the aggro away from you. Once that happens, you should be free to wail on the mob with impunity using Arcane Shot and that, together with your pet’s attacks, should kill the mob long before it can ever get to you. To be honest, I didn’t really have a problem opening with Arcane Shot, as long as I was prepared to move backwards as my pet engaged. The pet still managed to get the aggro quickly. Things become decidedly easier when you get Concussive Shot at level 8. Then you can open with Concussive Shot, which buys you a lot of time to kill mobs before they reach you. Actually, I found an even better strategy was to open with Steady Shot, followed quickly by Arcane Shot, and then Concussive Shot. That puts the mob in a serious hole, health-wise, and also starts the Concussive Shot timer after you’ve already done damage.

4. The whole problem with aggro and such described above is completely moot once you ding level 10, because at level 10 you can finally control your pet. What I like to do is create a /petattack macro that I can stick on my action bar. And when I learn Hunter’s Mark (at level 14), I put that in the macro as well. Then I can target a mob and hit the macro to start combat. My pet runs in and once he’s established aggro, I begin my attack.

5. I’m planning to level as Survival, at least in the beginning. Eventually I want to be Beast Master, so that I can tame all possible beasts. But that isn’t really an issue in the early game, so I’m not going to worry about it. I’ve noodled around with Survival on other Hunter’s and I’ve found it to be a surprisingly fun spec.

Those are my notes for now. Time will tell if I continue leveling Balista for any length of time. I’m having fun now, but we’ll have to see how I feel once I get off the Lost Isles.

I often wonder which classes are best for people new to World of Warcraft. I’m more interested in classes that are fun to level, not classes that are fun at end-game. At end-game, all classes have their appeal and it really comes down to play style. But for new players, it might be interesting to consider whether one or two classes have an edge in fun at the beginning of the game.

To be honest, I hesitate to discuss this topic at all. These days all classes are completely viable for leveling. There was a time when this was not the case. I remember a time, back before Burning Crusade, when warriors and paladins were challenging to level. At least they were for me. Warriors seemed particularly squishy. It might seem odd to call a warrior squishy, but at the early levels at least, Warriors weren’t particularly well equipped to take on more than one or maybe two mobs. And they didn’t really have what I like to call a “get out of jail free card” up their sleeve. A get out of jail free card is a trick that a class provides that allows a player to get out of trouble fast, when things have really gone south in a battle. Rogues, for example, have Vanish, which is arguably one of the best get out of jail free cards in the game. Hunters have Feign Death. You get the idea. Warriors didn’t really have a trick like Vanish or Feign Death, so when they got into trouble, they just had to fight their way out or die. In my case, dying was frequently the result. I’m guessing that warriors got better as they got to higher levels, but I could never get a warrior to a high enough level to find out.

Paladins had a different problem. I tried leveling a Paladin right before Burning Crusade came out. I even managed to get her to a fairly high level before giving up. The problem back then wasn’t dying, it was the pace of combat. I leveled as protection, and things died slowly. On the plus side, I could take on many mobs at once without dying. In fact, it was a strategy. Take on as many mobs at once and just keep rolling with combat. The idea was to keep adding mobs as other mobs died. Some people took this to an extreme and basically leveled by grinding mobs. AoE grinding, I believe it is called. There was a certain appeal to that kind of play, but I could never keep it up for any length of time. I like to quest, and killing mobs, for me, is always just a means to an end.

Another character that has been challenging to level in the past was rogue. My first character in WoW was a rogue, actually. I don’t remember having a great deal of trouble leveling as a rogue back then, but in BC and Wrath, rogues stopped being fun for me once they got into their 60s. I have a level 60-something Blood Elf rogue that’s still hanging out in Nagrand because I couldn’t stand leveling her anymore. The problem was that although I could kill things fast enough, I’d be at half health or worse at the end of each battle. I like moving from one mob to the next quickly. I definitely don’t want to have to stop to drink or bandage after every battle. It’s likely that if I’d played around with specs and such I might have found a combination that worked better, but I never had the patience to experiment. Especially when I had other characters waiting to be played.

Fast forward to the present and things have changed considerably. Paladins were basically fixed in Wrath and became a blast to level. Retribution was totally fixed. Mobs fell with ease. I really enjoyed Paladins back in Wrath and they remain fun to play even today.

The award for most improved classes (for leveling, at least) in Cataclysm definitely goes to warrior and rogue. Warriors are now a joy to level, and that goes for both fury and arms. My only complaint with the warrior class is that I sometimes feel like I spend all my time staring at my action bar, waiting for abilities to either proc or come off cooldown. But it’s a minor complaint. If you are thinking of rolling a warrior, you probably won’t be disappointed. They are a blast to play.

And that brings us to the rogue class, which is currently my favorite class in the game. The big problem with rogues, that they would end up severely down on health after each battle, has been completely fixed by Recuperate, a self heal that is also, in my opinion, the single best thing to happen to the rogue class Cataclysm. As long as Recuperate is up, there should be absolutely no problem with health. You’ll always be topped off. The other thing I love about rogues is that they have so many ways to get out of trouble. There’s Vanish, of course, but there’s also Blind and Gouge. And Kidney Shot as well. All abilities that can buy you time to get away if you have to. I’m also a big fan of rogue combat. It’s fast and things die very quickly.

Stealth, of course, is the defining rogue ability, and I absolutely love it. Stealth allows me to avoid encounters when I’ve got better things to do. I think it’s an ADD thing, but frequently, when I’m trying to go from point A to point B, I just want to get to B without having to fight all the mobs in my way. Stealth lets me do that. I don’t always choose to stealth, of course. Rogue combat is too much fun for that. But it’s there if I want it.

What rogue spec do I like? Surprisingly enough, I’m finding subtlety to be the most fun. Keep in mind that I’m talking about leveling here. If I were running instances, or raiding, or hanging out in battlegrounds all the time, I might like a different spec. But for killing quest mobs, subtlety is really quite fun. What makes subtlety so great? In a word, Shadowstep. Shadowstep feels a little like a warrior’s Charge, which is another ability I’m quite fond of. Shadowstep gets you positioned perfectly behind your enemy, ready to deal a lethal blow. Used together with Premeditation and the result is usually devastating. A typical attack begins with Premeditation, followed by Shadowstep, and then Ambush. At which point I’ve got at least 4 combo points on the target and I can finish with Eviscerate. Most mobs are dead at that point.

To sum up: rogue. You get Vanish as an excellent get out of jail free card, and stealth, which lets you avoid mobs you don’t feel like fighting (or generally sneaking around anywhere you aren’t supposed to be). You also get Recuperate, an excellent self heal. Mobs die quickly, and the general pace of combat is quick and fun. For specs, I suggest giving subtlety a try. It’s surprisingly fun. If, however, f you don’t think rogue is the class for you, then don’t be afraid to give warrior a try.

Goblins have become my new favorite race. Before Cataclysm came out, I was sure that I was going to be running with the Worgen for most of the expansion, but thing didn’t work out that way. I do love the Worgen starting area. I’ve played though it a number of times without getting sick of it. The Goblin starting area is fun too, but I don’t love it as much as the Worgen starting area. There’s just something about the Worgen starting area that has the perfect mix of atmosphere and story that all comes together to make the experience special.

Once I get out of the Worgen starting area, however, I find myself losing interest in my Worgen characters. I just don’t find them compelling to play. I recently rolled a Worgen priest named Beatrys in order to play through some of the Alliance content I hadn’t yet experienced since Cataclysm was released. But 45 levels was all I could manage before I lost interest. I’d like to think I’ll get back to leveling Beatrys at some point, but for now, I’m having too much fun playing Goblins.

I don’t roleplay, but from an RP perspective, Goblins seem to me to have a perfect attitude and personality. They can be evil, but they can just as easily be good. Well, maybe not good, exactly, but at least not entirely evil. They have just the right amount of both humor and seriousness. And I love the way they look, especially the female Goblins. They are just the right size. Not too big, but not too small, either. They look great on all the mounts I’ve tried so far, and that’s a big deal for me, because I like my characters to look good on mounts. In contrast, Gnomes, the “small” race on the Alliance side, usually look too small on many mounts.

I think the comparison between Goblin and Gnome is interesting. For some reason, at least to me, Goblins appear more substantial than Gnomes. They fill their space better. I’m not exactly sure why that is, but now that I’ve played a Goblin for so long, I find myself unable to play a Gnome. I used to like Gnomes, actually. I have a couple of Gnome characters that I’ve even spent a fair amount of time playing in the past. Unfortunately, Gnomes just don’t seem to work for me anymore.

I’m liking Goblins so much that I’m beginning to think I’d like to turn all of my characters into Goblins. And by “turn into Goblins”, I’m not talking about a race change. I’m not interested in spending any more money than the basic subscription fee for the game. If I were really serious about changing characters into Goblins, I’d have to delete old characters and roll new ones. I’ve basically filled all ten of my character slots on my “main” server and I can’t have any more characters there without making some hard decisions.

I’m in the process of contemplating a hard decision right now. My hunter, Ecgric, is in danger of being deleted. When I first rolled Ecgric, I was pretty excited about being able to roll an undead hunter. I still think Undead hunters are pretty cool. Unfortunately, I’m just not feeling that excited about playing Ecgric. And every time I play through the Goblin starting area, I see all the interesting pets I could be taming, and I promise myself I will roll a Goblin hunter one of these days.

Over the weekend I finally took the plunge and rolled a Goblin hunter. Her name is Balista, and my plan is to use her to run instances and tame pets. My main continues to be my rogue Vyxiana, and that isn’t likely to change. But I’m interested to see where things will go with Balista. If I find that I enjoy playing her more than Ecgric, then I think Ecgric’s days may be numbered. Which will make me sad, as I like Ecgric. I’ll just imagine that he’s off on grand adventures without me.

Looks like I haven’t updated this blog in <del>seven</del> six months (can’t math). To be honest, for the last couple of months (or longer? I can’t quite remember) I’ve had the blog set to “private”, so nobody could see it anyway. Even worse, I’d actually stopped playing WoW a couple months back. I’m playing now, though, and it seems like a good time to bring the blog back as well. Will I actually update? That remains to be seen. But, as always, I have the best intentions.

So what’s with the blog silence? Lots of things, really. But it all boils down to my getting a new job and suddenly not having as much time as I used to for playing and blogging and such. I’d pretty much convinced myself that I was never going to play WoW again, except maybe on the weekends, and so I ought to save the $15 and cancel my subscription. Which I did. For a while, I thought it would even stick. I almost completely forgot about WoW. But, like any decent addiction, WoW called out to me to return. Which I did.

Now I’m having a blast leveling Vyxiana, my new Goblin rogue. I’m even tempted to say that I’m having more fun now than I’ve ever had playing WoW. I don’t think that’s really true. I’ve had some good times in the past. But Blizzard really made rogues fun in Cataclysm. More about that later (I hope; don’t hold me to it, though). And Vyxiana isn’t just a rogue, she’s a rogue engineer. It doesn’t get much better than that. Engineering is one of my favorite professions (mounts, pets, and bombs, what’s not to like).

Back in Wrath, I had goals. I even managed to achieve most of them. I think I should have goals for Cata as well. Here’s a potential list (I say “potential” because I don’t consider this list final):

Level all my current Horde characters to 85. I’m shocked to say I’ve only managed to level Jeldor to 85. Arcaenia is close at 82, but I don’t believe she’ll be next. Vyxiana is most likely to be my next 85.

Craft a Mechano-Hog. This is my one left-over goal from Wrath and I mean to achieve it this time around. That’s one of the reason’s Vyxiana is an engineer. Also, she’d look great on it.

Get exalted with my guild. Seems like this would be a good thing to achieve, so I will (try, at least).

Get lots of pets. What the heck. Might as well set the bar high and shoot for Petting Zoo.

Get lots of mounts. I won’t set the bar quite as high as I did for the pet achievement. I’d be happy if I could get Leading the Cavalry on another character (I’ve already done it once on Rubeola).

Probably the hardest goal: Play one character as if it were my main throughout the Cata expansion. If I can do this at all, I suspect I will play either Vyxiana, or Viljams, my warlock. But restricting my play to one character has always been a challenge for me, so I don’t know how this goal will shake out.

Oh yeah. I have a new banner at the top of the blog. The old banner featured characters I’m not playing right now. The old banner was 75% Alliance, but you’ll notice that the new banner is 100% Horde. In the years I’ve played WoW, I’d not really taken sides between Alliance and Horde. I have characters of both factions and have enjoyed them all equally. Or so I thought. But lately my play has been mostly on the Horde side, and I’m beginning to think that I prefer playing Horde. I’ll leave the reasons for that to another post (with the best intentions that I’ll actually write another post, of course).

That’s about all I’ve got for now. With any luck, I’ll be back for another post tomorrow (or the day after, or, well, some day, hopefully).

1. Cataclysm may be my favorite expansion so far. I’ve now visited all the new high-level zones and I like them all. Jeldor is currently working on Twilight Highlands and the quality is as high as the other zones. The revamped old zones are also quite good, though the zones with the most changes are better than the zones with fewer changes. For example, Silverpine, which has been completely redone, is outstanding, but Arathi Highlands, which has basically just been streamlined a bit, is not.

2. I’m nervous about PUGing the new instances. Even as a DPS. What worries me is that I know the new instances requires people to think, rather than blindly attack. I tend to get tunnel vision and lose sight of the bigger picture. I’m sure I just need to jump in and learn to keep my eyes open for opportunities to use my utility abilities such as Hex and Wind Shear.

3. The only instance I’ve experienced so far is Vortex Pinnacle on normal. It was a lot of fun. There was only one death. Mine. It was the final boss and I guess I should have figured out that I needed to stand in the triangles, but I didn’t get that until it was too late. Fortunately, Reincarnation allowed me to get right back into the fight and I didn’t make the same mistake again. Every time a triangle opened up, you can be sure I ran right into it.

4. I’m really digging the new guild perks and guild leveling system. But it really makes me want to play the characters that are in the guild I like the most. Perhaps that’s Blizzard’s evil plan. Whenever I play other toons that are not in my main guild, I feel like I’m cheating my guild because I’m not contributing to leveling and achievements and such. I’m not complaining. It’s just an observation.

5. I’ve heard people complain that archeology is kind of boring and feels like just a bit like fishing. I guess I don’t agree. I enjoy the mechanics of archeology and it doesn’t really feel much like fishing to me. On the other hand, I don’t love archeology enough to level it all the way to 525 in one sitting. I find I like doing it a bit at a time, while I’m also doing other things. So I’m leveling it kind of slowly, but I do intend to level it all the way to the level cap.

That’s about all I’ve got for now.

I’m not dead. Actually, I am. I was killed by Deathwing just yesterday. That was pretty cool. Got the Stood in the Fire achievement and everything. It was on Ecgric the hunter, though, and I hadn’t played Ecgric in weeks. I’m not sure how I feel about gaining the achievement on Ecgric as opposed to, say, Jeldor.

Speaking of Jeldor, he’s my first level 85. I never expected Jeldor to be first to 85. I figured I’d level either a Worgen or Goblin to 85 first. Of course, I am leveling both a Worgen and a Goblin. But I figured if I wanted to be in a position to participate in end-game stuff with my guild, I needed at least one level 85. I started off with Arcaenia, my mage, in Vashj’ir, and that turned out to be a bit of a pain. I like Vashj’ir. But I think Vashj’ir is best done after doing Hyjal. You’ll be a higher level and your aggro circle will be smaller. That helps a lot when you can’t always tell how far away you are from mobs. Vashj’ir really requires thinking in three dimensions. You can look like you are right next to a mob, but a swivel of the camera shows you are actually much farther than you thought. Or closer. Which is why a smaller aggro circle helps. So do Hyjal first, pick up a level or two and some better gear, and then hit up Vashj’ir. It should be much easier.

Anyway, Jeldor. I started him in Hyjal, then went to Vashj’ir, and finally Deepholm, where hit 85. Currently he’s questing in Uldum. I intend to finish all of the Cataclysm zones at least once. In previous expansions I had the bad habit of losing interest in questing as soon as a character reached the level cap. Consequently, I never saw some of the content. I don’t want to make that same mistake with Cataclysm. Fortunately, the questing has been fabulous. I’ve loved all of the zones so far. I’d be hard pressed to pick favorites. Vashj’ir is so different looking that it is probably my favorite zone to look at. Deepholm is also an interesting zone to look at, being basically a giant cave. Hyjal has probably been my least favorite zone, though I still liked it. So far, Uldum is shaping up to be my favorite all-around zone. The quests in Uldum are very imaginative, and possibly some of the best in the game. Visually, Uldum is fascinating. I love looking at it.

Now that Jeldor is 85, I spend my time on archeology, Tol Barad dailies, and leveling my Worgen and Goblin. More about them in later posts.
